Minutes

Managed to spend almost a week on Jacob's birthday** this year, and my physical/mental state is paying for it.
**The term "birthday" generally implies one day which, for reasons unknown, we can never really cut it down to, so I now categorize the entire period of celebration under "birthday" and then give each day a separate name.

Wednesday, April 21, 2010 - Actual Birthday Eve

Mark takes Jacob to t-ball while I head to a League meeting. Come home, decorate house, wrap gift. Go to bed wondering if/hoping Jacob will sleep in.

Thursday, April 22, 2010 - Actual Birthday
Jacob awakes for the day at 6:09 a.m., a close second to his personal record of 5:48. Begins asking when he can open his present. Give in and let him open it at 8:02. Flying Turtle = Big Hit. Rides it all through the house while I get myself together, then out the door by 9 for tennis. Hit the donut shop on the way back to pick up donut holes for school celebration. Get lunch from Sonic, then head to school for a class picnic. Mark arrives at 12:15, we participate in the school Birthday Production, I have a case of the Bawls on the way out. Go home, do some work, pick Jacob up from school. Back home, play toys and leave for Disgusting/Incredible Pizza. Celebrate Jacob's and father-in-law's birthdays, leave when the crying-from-exhaustion starts. Debate going to bed at 8:00 versus watching the Thunder game. Game wins; I will have lost come morning.

Friday, April 23, 2010 - Pre-Friend Birthday Party Day
Play toys while baking cookies, doing laundry, and answering work emails. Leave for classmate's birthday party at the bowling alley. Get there and immediately want a cocktail (think 17 little boys on a hard, wooden floor throwing 6-pound balls around while hyped up on pizza and sugar). Calm one upset little boy whose mother is in the restroom by asking him if he's ever bowled before. Daydream again about a cocktail when his response is, "Yes, on my mom's iPhone." Leave bowling alley, run a few errands, then drive downtown to pick Mark up and hit the Arts Festival. Park in the closest spot (approximately 1 mile from said Festival), walk, eat enough calories to kill a hippo, buy Jacob a balloon for $1.50 ($1.50, I said! WTF?), go home.

Saturday, April 24, 2010 - Friend Birthday Party Day
Clean house. Head to science museum for party. Freak out when the parking lot is fuller than I've ever seen it AND it starts to rain. Drop Mark and Jacob at door, haunt the lot for 20 minutes waiting for a spot, go inside. Parking situation causes all guests AND cake guy to be 10 minutes late. Watch ice cream being made with liquid nitrogen, and one of the guests pick his nose and eat it. Make a mental note of which present he brought so we can use gloves when handling it. Notice that I've forgotten matches to light candles. Wait for museum to find theirs. Sing, then watch 20 little boys scream in excitement when the volcano cake erupts. Wonder if we'll get our security deposit back. Notice that I've forgotten knife to cut cake and spatula to serve it. Wait for museum to find theirs. Release guests to explore museum, clean up. Notice that I've forgotten to bring container for leftover cake. Wait for museum to get trash can. Watch museum employee load presents into car while I explain that I don't typically like to use my muscles in public because it tends to make people jealous. Go home, open presents. Consider adding on to our house in order to accommodate Jacob's new toys. Put Jacob to bed, stay up way too late watching our Thunder beat the Lakers, go to bed regretting the half bottle of wine I drank.

Sunday, April 25, 2010 - Family Birthday Party Day
Bake. Clean. Bake. Frost. Bake. Go to Home Depot. (Really, is it not possible to go one weekend without a Home Depot trip?) Family arrives; eats cookies, cupcakes, cake balls. Watch Jacob open more presents. Note that I won't need an addition if I just get rid of everything in my closet. Say goodbye to guests, head to t-ball practice. Leave after 30 minutes, eat Mexican food with Mimi and Bop. Come home, play Blongo Ball (ladder ball) in backyard until the crying-from-exhaustion returns. Hit the sack so that I'm not the next to suffer this malady.

Monday, April 26, 2010 - Post Birthday Day
Jacob begins planning his 7th Birthday.

The old fart, Mike said...

Outstanding historic data of the week that was. I'm still chuckling as I write this.
