This morning, we found out that another of Jacob's classmates lost her first tooth. This puts the Toothless Wonder total to about 4 or 5 children now. When I told Jacob about Kate's big night, he covered his ears and said he, "didn't want to talk about it." My poor son is horrified by this natural occurrence, and I have to agree, it is probably very disturbing to a child. The fact that your teeth fall out of your mouth - or are pushed out by bigger, stronger teeth - can't be an easy thing to digest. Mark and I have tried to start talking the whole thing up, but we're facing serious resistance. And getting my finger in his mouth in an attempt to check his teeth myself is almost harder/worse than getting my finger in the cat's mouth in an attempt to shove a pill down her throat.
Anyway, I can't remember how old I was when I lost my first tooth, but probably not much older than 5. I do remember, though, that I'd get a quarter or something for each tooth. Wanna know what the going rate is now? $5 per tooth. So, Jacob has 20 teeth, which means there's $100 in that mouth of his. And what about wisdom teeth? Does having those suckers extracted mean that they cost more, like you're paying settlement fees for putting your child through that mess? We seem to have a lot to learn. I think I'll patiently wait with Jacob, hoping that we can postpone the inevitable.
